Zambia is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered by eight countries (Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola). Prior to achieving independence from Britain in 1964, Zambia was called Northern Rhodesia. Zambia is divided into 9 provinces (Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Luapula, Lusaka, Northern, Northwestern, Southern, and Western), and it's capital city is Lusaka. English is the official language of Zambia. However, there are more than 70 local languages spoken in Zambia, of which the most common are Bemba, Kaonde, Lozi, Lunda, Luvale, Nyanja, and Tonga.
Zambia, with a population of 11.5 million people, is among the world's poorest nations, with more than 70% of the population living in poverty. With 17% of the population infected with HIV / AIDS, and malaria prevalent throughout the country, life expectancy is less than 40 years of age. It is estimated that there are 1.2 million orphans in Zambia.
Despite the poverty and hardships, Zambians are very friendly people, with a strong sense of pride in their country. Zambia boasts spectacular scenery, including the beautiful Victoria Falls and superb National Parks with impressive wildlife. |
